POEM: What It Could've Been

It could have been a dark night, planned with lies
twined around the details to aid our devious escape
(all we wanted was a little time alone, after all),
ending in a secret we could carry through the halls.

It could have been lit with afternoon sunlight around
the edges of the doors and windows, pushed out
by curtains, locked doors, a house quiet save for us,
our whispered intimacies, our clumsy touches, our love.

It could have been a rebellious day of skipping school,
a rented hotel room, our favorite music, a well-designed
fortress around us, protecting us

POEM: I Can't Let Anyone Go

I can't let anyone go.  I twinge at the sight of him holding her,
although I am being held myself, in my own photos and every night,
but I never knew if leaving was the right thing to do, years ago.

I can't let anyone go.  I twinge at the thought of the light-eyed
Italian from Meriden who only came in the dark and would have
hurt me anyway.  I can't play the game because I always fall in love.

I can't let anyone go.  I twinge at the flash of red hair or a black
Nissan Altima, think that he should see the play I wrote about us;
it started as a love letter, but t

CHARACTERS:
ARNIA - Captain of Princess ADINA's guard
ADINA - Princess of Tura and next in line for the throne
RADLIN - Queen of Tura and current ruler
ITANA -  One of Princess ADINA's guard
PALINA - One of Princess ADINA's guard
HINGAR - Prince of Orden

TIME: The present in a fantasy world named Tura

SCENE 1
SETTING: A royal courtyard/garden, late afternoon

Princess ADINA wears a simple gown and delicate crown upon her head while reading a book.  ARNIA enters, in casual dress.

ARNIA: (curtseying) Good day, my princess.

ADINA: (looking up) Arnia!  You're back.  You're wearing a dress.

I always know when you have visited me in dreams:
I wake with the feeling of looking out across a tranquil
ocean horizon, the flattest line stretching before me,
a breeze warm against my face, serenity expanding.

It takes time for me to remember why the satisfaction
crosses my mind; it comes like cream poured into coffee,
rising softly, blooming like a fractal from darkness: We
spent hours of nebulous dream time, talking together.

It wasn't about nakedness: rather an intimacy created
by you sitting, me in front of you, comfortable, relaxed,
encircled by slight grazes

Are we living out a great love of two human souls
On Gaia’s surface?  Or are we free and not made
Manifest by the imagination of many lovers whose
Emotion does not remain earthbound, but cascades
Into the myriad dimensions of my mother Universe,
The womb I was born from in that bright explosion.

Could we still feel something true, whichever way
The answer lies?  Could your touch on my face
Represent every man’s hand coming to every
Woman’s cheek?  Could my secret gaze of your
Mouth be the ripple of the moment before lovers
