POEM: A Dance

A brief one, during a nap:

Where ever I was, I was on the coast,
on an island, the nights chilly.  I always
seemed alone.  I kept seeing him (as I
have, these past few days) until he tells
me to join him for a drink, for a dance.

I put my arms on his shoulders (his green
eyes were clear, looking straight at me)
and we move without music, an ocean's
sway, bodies close.  "Come see me later,"
he says.  I shake my head, glance at his girl.

"If everything were different, then we would
be different," I said.  He nods and we continue
to sway, his hands gentle on my waist,

POEM: An Apology

In the last remnants of sleep, a moment with you:

A hallway, busy and crowded, and I see you--
of course it's your eyes, then your almost-white
hair that capture me.  I step close to you.

You say, "I'm sorry."  I stand on my toes to kiss
your cheek, but the honesty of dreams led my
mouth very close to yours to say, "It's okay.

Our lips were very close, our faces very still.
The dream pauses.  You stepped back (of
course) and asked how our story was going.

POEM: I Remember That Skin

There is only one person I know with
skin pale, toned and shaded pink, hair light,
but what were your arms and elbows,
legs and knees doing, tangled up in mine?

The suppositions and examinations begin:
a metaphor of becoming closer, my own
solitary dream, a coincidence, nothing to
worry about or something to cause concern?

Or was it us, connected again, doing what
reality forbids us, hidden desires surfacing
in the Dreaming, our unfinished business,
only acceptable here, where it isn't real?

I awoke with a sudden intake of breath,
a gasp of surprise, a wave of confusio
